On Monday, the NBA announced it will play its first All-Star game in Memphis, Tenn.
In a nod to the city, the Grizzlies announced they will host the game on Sunday, Dec. 17.
“Memphis is the home of the National Basketball Association, and we’re thrilled to have the Grizzlies host the 2017 All-Stars Game in our hometown,” Grizzlies President and CEO Josh Kroenke said in a statement.
“This is a fitting celebration of the history of the NBA, which dates back to 1948 and which is recognized around the world as one of the most enduring, and beautiful, sports franchises in the world.”
The Grizzlies are the first NBA franchise to host a game in a major U.S. city.
In 2016, the Houston Rockets hosted the All-NBA Game in Houston, and the Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks hosted the 2017 NBA All-Time Classic in New York City.
“We’re thrilled that the Grizzlies will host our 2017 All Star Game,” Kroenkes said.
“Our city is home to the National Hockey League, and our city is a great destination for our players and fans to enjoy the game of basketball.
We look forward to working with the NBA to make this the best game in the country.”
Memphis hosted the 2016 NBA All Star Classic, and in 2015, the city hosted the annual All-State Games.
Kroenks team also has partnered with the National Football League, NFL Players Association, American College of Surgeons and many other organizations to host the event in Memphis.
The Grizzlies will open the 2017 season against the Boston Celtics at FedExForum on March 9, and play their first four games against the Charlotte Hornets at FedExField on March 16.
Memphis also hosts the 2018 NBA AllStar Game, and is expected to host at least one home game during the 2019-20 NBA season.
“The Grizzlies are proud to be part of a great and successful partnership with the NFL, and to be able to host our first All Star game in 2017, in Memphis,” Kroens team said.
